Disaster struck yesterday at the popular Balogun Market in Lagos when a six-storey building was gutted by fire razing the building to its foundation.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire which reportedly started at about 5:30pm quickly spread to other floors in the building.
Men of the Lagos fire service, who arrived at the scene could not however salvage the situation as the surging crowd caused a gridlock.
Residents and traders inside the building, who attempted to salvage their properties, were forced to beat a retreat when the fire raged uncontrollably.
No casualty was recorded as the fire fighter were on hand to rescue one of the traders trapped in the building.
